WSG Mauritius pays $1.8bn for IPL broadcast rights

There has been no resolution in the tussle between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sony TV over telecast rights of the Indian Premier League. Both parties have asked for one more day to work out an out-of-court settlement and if that does not happen, a court order is expected the day after. Meanwhile, CNBC-TV18 exclusively learns that WSG Mauritius has paid nearly double to the BCCI to get the IPL rights

The IPL value has nearly doubled in one year. WSG Mauritius has paid nearly double the amount WSG India paid to the BCCI last year. This time, the contract is for a nine-year period as opposed to last year’s 10-year contract. WSG India, last year, paid about USD 900 million and WSG Mauritius, it is learnt, has paid the BCCI USD 1.8 billion this year for the contract.

This time, WSG Mauritius is giving out the broadcasting rights for the entire nine-year period as opposed to last year when WSG India gave it out to Sony TV for five years.
Three broadcasters are in the fray for the rights: NDTV, Sony TV and ESPN-Star Sports. By Friday, WSG Mauritius is expected to announce the final winner.
It is learnt WSG Mauritius is also very particular about the quality of the broadcast content as against last year when Sony TV was accused of poor broadcast quality. A lot of stringent clauses are expected to be incorporated in the contract to ensure good quality broadcast.
